“Fake it till you make it” doesn’t mean you’re trying to fool people
I saw a post on Facebook the other day that got under my skin. The person was saying “fake it till you make it” is ridiculous and wrong. They thought there was no reason to be fake, people should be real. I had to roll my eyes, and then do something I rarely do. I commented, telling them how wrong they were. In a nice way.
I’ve spent the last year studying for a masters in sports psychology, and I think people look at the phrase “Fake it til you make it” wrong.
I think people misunderstand the real meaning.
It’s about living your life and training like you’re already there. Like you’ve already made it to the top. This doesn’t mean spending money you don’t have, it means getting up every day and working hard, surpassing your goals, training like you’re the best in the world. Studying your business, and demonstrating a work ethic that makes people think you’re the CEO, not the receptionist, if what you want to be someday is the CEO.
Look for mentors who know more than you, and can help you find the right direction, then watch, listen and emulate.
It’s about doing what the best of the best do (physical training every day, mental training, attitude) to be the best, until you are the best. Learn by doing. Basically work at it like you’re already there. Visualize like you’re already there. At least this is the thought process we learn in sports psychology.
It’s not about trying to fool anyone but your own brain. It’s about teaching your brain the neural pathways needed to succeed.
Your brain doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what you visualize. Ever told a lie so many times, soon you’re not sure what the truth is, and your mind thinks the lie is real? That’s what fake it till you make it is, except you’re not trying to deceive anyone but yourself, and in a good way. Yes, sometimes it’s about smiling when you feel like crap. Did you know there’s scientific evidence that smiling can change your brain’s self talk?
Having a shitty day? When someone asks how you’re doing, saying “Fantastic!” like you mean it can change your internal dialogue. Nervous about going to a conference? Dress well, walk tall, and know you’re supposed to be there. Your mind will feel the difference and you’ll enjoy the conference instead of wondering if you’ll fit in.
